Meet Dr Andrea Hernandez

Andrea Hernandez, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist at Cognitive Psychiatry of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Hernandez treats adult patients with mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Dr. Hernandez completed her residency training at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Since then, she has worked with adults with a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse conditions. She has served patients from North Carolina in many different settings: at community mental health clinics in Wilson and Rocky Mount, through telemedicine services at Ocracoke Island, and as attending physician at Vidant Medical Center, Central Regional Hospital, and Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was also an assistant professor at East Carolina University and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Education and training other clinicians have been an important part of Dr. Hernandez’s career. She has taught and supervised medical students from East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina. She has also trained physician assistants from Elon University.

Dr. Hernandez has been a member of the North Carolina Psychiatric Association and American Psychiatric Association since 2007. She holds medical licenses in North Carolina and Florida, as well as in Costa Rica.  

Dr. Hernandez strives to help patients identify areas of strength and to provide them with the tools to overcome obstacles. She believes in empowering patients to make informed decisions about their mental health care while making meaningful lifestyle changes.

Through individualized treatment plans, Dr. Hernandez helps patients through psychoeducation, psychopharmacology, and supportive psychotherapy. She believes the key to effective treatment is collaboration with other clinicians and communication with family members.
